Project 1: Looking back evaluation
I have made one short song from the Hip Hop genre and put the different element sections of it in a padlet. I have picked the genre that I found the most interesting and appealing and have then proceeded to make a small track out of the genre I have looked at. I have done research in class and continued to do extra research at home. After listening to 3 different songs that I picked from the Hip Hop genre I proceeded to note down the instrumentation, tempo and structure used in each song so I could learn what I needed to do to make a successful Hip Hop track. I have recorded this information in a blog as well as the five main elements of Hip Hop, the common instruments used in a Hip Hop song, the five characteristics of Hip Hop and a couple of sentences about the history of Hip Hop for example where, when and who created the Hip Hop that we know today.
I have included a link of the Padlet we made as a group researching the progression of Hip Hop throughout the years for a rough idea of what my track has been made to sound like. Including the instrumentation used throughout the generation of hiphop. Most of the hip hop songs in the late 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s all the way through to the present day still use the Roland 808 drum kit so I used the same kit for my track to make it sound like most of the hiphop songs you'll hear. My track has a more modern hiphop melody and like most hiphop tracks it was made with synths and sample basslines, Melodies etc. In the Padlet page There is songs by multiple hiphop artists throughout the history of hiphop including songs throughout the late 70s, 80s, 90s & 2000s all through to today which will have the same sort of sounds as mine. I have also uploaded my final song composition onto Soundcloud and have embedded the Soundcloud link below. I have also made a padlet page with the different sections of my track with the five main elements and information for the order that I made my track in as well. I also made a short experiment of a Hip Hop drum pattern which I changed for my final composition as it was pretty basic so I switched it up by playing around with hi hats and adding more of them and also using different snares and adding more of them. I also used more kick drums and switched up the kick pattern as well. The bounce for that is on the padlet page I made as well. The link to that is below. I also had a couple of classmates as well as at least one tutor to listen to my track and experiment to give me feedback on it. They gave me some good feedback and helpful advice which I took into consideration when I worked on my composition.
At the start of this project I already knew a few skills since I was in Level 1 but throughout the project I learnt some Production skills which I didn't know at the start of the project such as Compression and mixing. Which I later applied to my final short Hip Hop composition to give it that extra little boost to make it sound better than it did before. I also learnt a different way of evaluating my research by going in depth of the instrumentation used in the three Hip Hop tracks I picked to evaluate. As well as writing down the structure of each of the chosen songs so then it could further help in the creation of my track. If I could change anything it would be to make my track longer like the full length of a proper song so I could add more depth to it.
